FAQs

What happens during a lactation visit?

That depends a lot on you and your questions and needs. An initial visit usually lasts 90 minutes to 2 hours. Typically we go over your and your baby’s health history and talk about your goals and challenges. Most people want to attempt a nursing session during the visit where we strategize hands-on about latch, positioning, and ergonomics. It can be nice to practice nursing with me there in different locations around your house - on the couch, in your bed, etc. We can do before and after baby weights with my accurate scale if there is a transfer, weight gain, or supply concern to determine how much milk the baby got while nursing. If you want pumping assistance, we can set up the pump and try it out and assess flange sizing. Then we end by discussing your options, given your goals, and collaborate on a plan that you can feel good about it.

Do you do Telehealth?

Yes, I offer Telehealth appointments. Telehealth works well for relatively uncomplicated follow-up, such as discussing a back-to-work pumping plan or weaning strategies. Latch or early weight gain issues are easier to address in-person. Because there is such a wide range of normal in breastfeeding, it’s hard to give advice about the normalcy of a particular feeding pattern without having a current weight for your baby.

Do you take insurance?

Yes, depending on your insurance - please see my more detailed explanation here.

Is my partner, spouse, older child, parent, or friend welcome at the visit?

Yes! All of the above. It’s really up to you and what would feel distracting or useful. I encourage your main support person or people to be at visits, especially prenatal consults or early postpartum visits, so they can benefit from the education as well. It’s also perfectly fine to do appointments alone if this is too much to juggle.

What is follow-up like after the visit?

After we meet, I do my best to check in and answer basic follow-up questions by text, phone or email, which is included in the initial list fee. If your situation is more complicated, I encourage a follow-up visit.
