Insurance & Payment for Lactation Home Visits
Insurance
Anthem PPO, Blue Cross PPO, Blue ShieldPPO, Multiplan (non-Aetna), PNOA, Sutter Health Plan HMO and HDHP, and United Health Care (UHC), Veteran Affairs Community Care Network (VA CCN) often fully cover my lactation services.
If you have one of the above companies, please fill out a Verification of Benefits form with The Lactation Network, who will verify and bill my services without cost or hassle to you. This should be done at least 2-3 days before we have a visit. Once they confirm coverage, you are guaranteed at least six fully covered visits.
I am in-network with Aetna, but currently in-between billers as of January 25 2025. I hope to get that sorted soon.
Kaiser does offer outpatient lactation care, although you will have to go to their office. Anything at home is self-pay.
If you have another insurance company, you can always try filling out the VOB form with The Lactation Network, but you might be out of luck. I can give you a superbill and you can try to get reimbursement from your company.
Self-Pay
Someday we’ll have universal healthcare! Meanwhile, insurance companies are required by the ACA to cover lactation services. In practice, it’s often difficult or impossible to utilize insurance for home lactation care.
My regular fee is $300 for an initial lactation consultation, and $200 per follow-up visit.
I charge a $100 travel fee to go to SF or Marin or the far reaches of the East Bay (more than 30 minutes drive from my location near MacArthur Bart)
I realize that is unaffordable to many people and I offer a sliding scale which is somewhat dependent on your situation and location. If you’re closer to me, I can go lower on the sliding scale. If you are on Medi-Cal or have true financial need, I also offer a lower fee. Please contact me.
